Hospitalization and Relapse
This study, conducted in 2020, focused on if care received at Paradigm Treatment Centers resulted in less mental health-related hospitalizations post-discharge, as well as which factors may indicate higher likelihood of future readmission to Paradigm. These factors include scores at intake on standardized instruments representing severity of symptoms as well as presence of childhood trauma, length of stay at Paradigm, and discharge type (by or against therapist recommendation). Clients who could not complete care due to insufficient insurance coverage must inherently leave against therapist recommendation, thus they are included in that category as well. The findings from this study showed that mental health-related hospitalizations do indeed occur less after treatment from Paradigm. Furthermore, the only factor that significantly impacted client readmission was discharge type. This demonstrates Paradigm’s ability to help clients with varying severity of symptoms, and that length of stay does not impact treatment success if discharge takes place at the therapist’s recommendation. This study also contains an inquiry into the cost of non-treatment by comparing the change in hospitalization rates pre- and post-treatment at Paradigm to cost analysis values of inpatient hospital care. Further research is intended to more precisely determine the cost of leaving mental health issues untreated.
